When to Consider Therapy for Articulation Disorder

Have you noticed your child pronounces words differently than other children their age?  Does your child leave out certain sounds when pronouncing a word?  If so, you may want to consider visiting a speech therapist near you for a consultation to see if your child has an articulation disorder.

What is an Articulation Disorder?

An Articulation Disorder exists when a child consistently makes speech sound errors that are not usually made by children of the same age. Sometimes articulation disorders are caused by a physical problem like a cleft lip or palate. However, for many articulation problems, there is no known cause. The difficulty in producing a single or a few sounds with no pattern is an articulation disorder. Multiple errors that can be grouped on some principle and thus forms patterns and severely affect the intelligibility of speech are Phonological Disorders. Sounds may be omitted, distorted, and substituted.

If there is a concern about your child’s speech and articulation make an appointment to have him/her evaluated. During the evaluation, your child will be examined in many different situations: naming pictures, counting, describing objects etc. The production of your child’s sounds will be listened to carefully and the speech-language pathologist will determine the kind of errors and their consistency, and recommend a treatment program if necessary.
